Listening Post: Dave Bass ‘NYC Sessions’

Jazz

Dave Bass, NYC Sessions (Whaling City Sound) It helps to have friends, that’s for sure. Pianist Dave Bass was on his way to a life in music (playing for a then-young Bobby McFerrin, touring with, yes, Brenda Lee) when a serious wrist injury wound up putting him on one heck of a detour. He became a lawyer and, at one point,l became the deputy attorney general for the state of California. When he was sure his jazz chops were back he made his first record as a leader with Ernie Watts and Mary Stallings. Here, a few years later, he’s in New York and along with being an entertaining and proficient player and leader, he continues to demonstrate a major gift for friendship. Along for the ride in his New York disc are no less than Phil Woods and Karrin Allyson, the latter on two tunes, “Endless Waltz,” and “Lost Valentine.” Harvie S. (as in Swartz) is his bass player and Ignacio Barroa is his drummer. Maybe his compositions aren’t solid gold but his musicianly friends are.  (Jeff Simon)
