Frank J. Hargrave, retired teacher, counselor

April 12, 1925 – Jan. 24, 2015

NIAGARA FALLS – Frank J. Hargrave, of Lewiston, a retired teacher and guidance counselor, died Saturday in Our Lady of Peace Health Care Center, Lewiston. He was 89.

Born in Marquette, Mich., he attended Niagara Falls High School and joined the Army in 1943, serving in the infantry in Europe. Returning from service, he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Canisius College and a master’s degree in education from Niagara University.

Mr. Hargrave began his career at Barker Central School as an English teacher, then went to Grand Island schools, where he was a guidance counselor and career counselor for 30 years. He retired in 1995.

A devout Catholic, he attended seminary for a year in high school and had a special devotion to St. Joseph. He was an avid reader and stayed fit by taking long walks on Goat Island at all seasons until a few years ago.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, the former Theresa M. DiCamillo; a son, Dr. Joseph S.; a daughter, Mary Anne Hargrave-Berkowitz; two sisters, Helen Buzzelli and Barbara; and seven grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Parish at St. Joseph Church, 1413 Pine Ave.
