Three Westside Boxing Club fighters were among seven local amateurs to win their open division class bouts during the first night of the New York State Golden Gloves Tournament on Saturday at The Tralf.
Nelson Madhi (178 pounds) and Anthony Woodruff (152) advanced to the next round, which takes place Feb. 28 at The Tralf, by knocking out their respective opponents. Jeffrey Nygayot of Westside advanced via decision at 132 pounds.
Semifinal bouts will be contested March 28 and the finals on May 2. While the Gloves are open to sub-novice, novice and open level fighters, only open division state champions advance to the national tournament in May.
Other open winners from the area included heavyweight Alex Dedevets (Goomba’s), 178-pounder Curtis Chaplin (Ultimate Fitness), 141-pounder Akhmed Aliyev of Northwest Buffalo Community Center and 152-pounder Mike Christopher (UB Boxing). Nygayot, Chaplin and Christopher advanced by beating Buffalo-Niagara Falls area boxers.
