Prize ruse bilks elderly Ransomville man out of $1,900

RANSOMVILLE – An elderly Ransomville man was bilked out of $1,900 after receiving a telephone call claiming he had won prizes from a bank, police said.

The victim told Niagara County sheriff’s investigators that he received a call on Jan. 9 informing him that he had won prizes, and would need to pay a fee in order to receive them. He wired the money over a two-week period to a person in Panama, police said, but never received any prizes.

An investigation is continuing.
