Time to put the brakes on political correctness
I’m so tired of political correctness, and how someone, somewhere, is always offended by something. So now Squaw Island is a vile and offensive name. I then read with interest the Jan. 20 letter to this column. Assuming the writer’s research is correct, I wonder if the original tribe of the area and Squaw Island, the Squawkiho, realize there own name is offensive?
Instead of naming the island Dedyo’wenoguhdoh (ugh) or Scajaquada Island, let’s rename the island in honor of the original inhabitants, who are thought to be descendants of the first human, “The Great Clan Mother.” Let’s call it Squawkiho Island, or Squaw Island for short.
