ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – Connor McDavid, the presumptive top pick in this summer’s NHL Draft, didn’t have to do much Thursday in the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. His linemates did most of the work for him.
Timo Meier and Travis Konecny had three goals and three assists combined as Team Orr blanked Team Cherry, 6-0, at the Meridian Centre.
McDavid, who plays for the OHL’s Erie Otters, could be considered a decoy for most of the game, as he drew defenders while Meier and Konecny were the beneficiaries. Meier plays for the Halifax Mooseheads and Konecny for the Ottawa 67s.
More than 250 NHL scouts were in attendance and those watching McDavid included Buffalo Sabres General Manager Tim Murray, who was an intermission guest on the feed the NHL Network provided from Rogers Sportsnet.
Also scoring for Team Orr were Ryan Pilon (Brandon Wheat Kings), Nathan Noel (Saint John Sea Dogs) and Paul Bittner (Portland Winterhawks). Goaltenders Nick McBride (Prince Albert Raiders) and Liam Herbst (Ottawa 67s) combined to make 32 saves for Team Orr.
