SPOTILA - Loretta D. "Laurie" (nee Dittrich)
January 21, 2015, age 69, of Haddonfield, NJ; beloved wife of James R.; loving mother of Jennifer M. Spotila (David Fiorito) of King of Prussia, PA and James A. Spotila (Dana Hawley) of Blacksburg, VA; cherished grandmother of Emmy Spotila; dear sister of Thomas Dittrich (Mary Beth) of Danville, CA.
Laurie was born in Cleveland, OH, graduated from Magnificat High School, earned a BS in Nutrition from University of Dayton, MS in Nutrition from Ohio State and Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from SUNY-Buffalo. She was a faculty member at Thomas Jefferson University and Drexel University in Philadelphia. An expert in molecular biology and genetics, she discovered the origins of replication of the SV-40 virus and yeast, and made important discoveries about the genetic basis of osteoporosis and collagen diseases. She co-founded and managed The Leatherback Trust, a major conservation organization saving sea turtles, and helped to mentor numerous graduate and undergraduate students with her husband Jim. Her business, Science Scribe, provided writing services for scientists and medical professionals. Dr. Spotila's family will receive friends on Monday evening, January 26, 7-9 PM at Kain-Murphy Funeral Services, 15 West End Ave., Haddonfield and again on Tuesday morning, January 27, 9:30-10:45 AM at Christ the King RC Church, 200 Windsor Ave., Haddonfield, where her Funeral Mass will follow at 11 AM. Interment Haddonfield Baptist Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Laurie's name be made to The Leatherback Trust, 99 Pacific St., Suite 555-A, Monterey, CA 93940;
