Dennis M. Greene, building contractor and farmer, dies at 83

Feb. 27, 1931 – Jan. 20, 2015

NIAGARA FALLS – Dennis M. Greene of Youngstown, a building contractor and farmer, died Tuesday, at home. He was 83.

Mr. Greene was a native of Niagara Falls, where he attended Trott Vocational High School and Niagara University. He became a member of the Plumber’s Union Local 129 in 1948 until his induction into the U.S. Army.

He served in Korea from 1952 to 1953 and received three Bronze Stars before being discharged as a sergeant first class.

After his military service, he became a contractor and vice president for Laur and Mack Contracting, retiring in 1996. He served the local community as mayor of Youngstown and village trustee.

Upon retirement, Mr. Greene remained active on his Creek Road farm in Youngstown. He served as a delegate for the American Shorthorn Association and traveled for the World Cattle Congress in Australia and Canada.

He was a member of the Niagara Falls Rotary Club, St. Vincent de Paul Society, and the Lewiston Choraleers.

He was president of the Youngstown Water Ski Club, and Youngstown Free Library, a member of the Town of Porter Historical Society Fort Niagara Association and Youngstown Volunteer Fire Company, and served as a minister at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, the former Gretchen Mack; a daughter, Catherine Guffey; three sons, Dennis A., William and Charles; two sisters, Donna Spendio and Marilyn Mazza; a brother, Paul; and five grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 218 Hinman St., Youngstown.
