Jeffrey Basil’s attorney, Joel Daniels, said he was surprised – and disappointed– in the guilty verdict against his client.
“There’s no winners here. There’s only losers,” he told reporters after the verdict was announced.
Basil was found guilty of second-degree murder and tampering with evidence in the pushing death of William Sager Jr. at Mollys Pub in the University District of Buffalo.
Daniels said the defense was “disappointed of course. And frankly surprised.”
He told reporters: “We had a narrow defense and the jury just didn’t go along with us.”
He said he didn’t think the prosecution proved intent. “We felt all along that the people just came up short with intent to kill or intent to cause serious injury,” Daniels said.
