USGS: Tiny earthquake under Lake Ontario near Olcott

For the second time in little more than a month this afternoon, a small earthquake was recorded in or near Niagara County.

At 3:38 p.m., the U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude 1.7 earthquake with an epicenter about 15.5 miles north of Olcott. Here's a map of the exact location: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ld60085511#summary

Niagara County sheriff's officials said no damage was reported in association with the reported tremor.

A magnitude 1.7 earthquake, according to the USGS, is "not felt" by humans "except by a very few under especially favorable conditions."

An even smaller earthquake - which measured a magnitude 1.5 - was recorded about 3.7 miles west of South Lockport at 6:27 p.m., Nov. 29, according to the USGS. Additional details about that tremor can be found here: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ld60084601#summary
