From Snowy to Sultry: 144 New Year's Eves in Buffalo

Should auld frigid New Year's Eves be forgot, and never brought to mind?

Not a chance.

One needn't look any further than last year for one of the chillier ball drops in recent memory at Roosevelt Plaza in downtown Buffalo when the mercury dropped into the teens.

And, it was a harbinger of even chillier times to come. The Polar Vortex gripped the region in the early few days of 2014 and brought with it the first of the year's two blizzards Jan. 6-8.

Ever wonder when the warmest New Year's Eve was in Buffalo?

You'd have to go all the way back to 1875.

President Ulysses S. Grant was midway through his second term. Buffalo was in the midst of a massive growth spurt from its nearly 118,000 residents of 1870 to more than 155,000 by 1880. The nation was getting ready to usher in its Centennial Year.

And, the temperature that day was 62 degrees.

One hundred thirty-nine years later, lake-effect snow is expected to fall in downtown Buffalo as the region prepares to welcome 2015 to town. Up to 18 inches is forecast by the National Weather Service through early Friday morning.

If New Year's Eve 2014 is to break today's snowfall record set only six years ago, they'll have to be at least 10 inches by midnight.

It still won't compare to 2001 when there was 29 inches of snow on the ground following a series of Christmas week snowstorms.

Want to know the coldest New Year's Eve day? That was 1880. The high topped out at just 5 degrees.

Did you know the thermometer only dipped below zero on one single New Year's Eve?

It's true -- back in '62.

That's Buffalo's all-time New Year's Eve low of minus-4.

So, before you raise that glass, stroll down memory lane for a bit with this National Weather Service statistical retrospective dating back to 1871, and find your favorite New Year's Eve.

Was it snow covered?
