Free coffee and tea on Thruway to celebrate new year

Drivers on the entire 570-mile New York State Thruway can celebrate the new year with free coffee and tea at all 27 Thruway service areas from 11 p.m. Wednesday until 7 a.m. Thursday, the Thruway Authority announced Tuesday.

Continuing a 44-year tradition, the free-beverage program is sponsored by corporations doing business at the service areas, McDonald’s Corp., Delaware North Companies, Travel Hospitality Services and HMS Host Corporation, the authority announced.

“This New Year’s Eve tradition, in collaboration with Thruway service area operators, is a great way to encourage motorists to take a break during their travels and to help encourage safe driving during the holiday season,” Thomas J. Madison, the Thruway Authority’s executive director, said.

Thruway spokeswoman Christina Klepper also urged motorists to remember not to stop along the shoulder of the road on the Thruway except in the case of an emergency.
