ARNOLD, Mary M.
ARNOLD - Mary M. Of Jacksonville, FL, died on December 16, 2014. She is survived by her daughter Agnes Love and her husband William of Buffalo, NY, son Raymond J. Wall of Jacksonville, son Robert E. Wall and his wife Silvana of Jacksonville, brother Dr. Jean George Haar and his wife Jean of Buffalo, brother-in-law William Burden of Athens, GA, her former husband Robert B. Wall of Jacksonville, grandsons Justin Sobczak and his wife Christy and great-grandson Ronan of Christiansburg, VA, Matthew Sobczak of Staunton, VA, Colin Sobczak of Buffalo, Kevin Wall of Boston, MA; Diego Wall of Jacksonville and many special nieces and nephews. Mary was proceeded in death by her husband Roger P. Arnold; her children John B. Wall and Frances M. Wall; her parents Emile and Agnes Conklin Haar; her sister Cecelia Burden and her many loving cousins. Mary was born in Buffalo, on August 6, 1928. She graduated from Neumann High School, Williamsville, NY in 1946. Mary received her Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce from D'Youville College, Buffalo, in 1950 and a Masters in Education from Canisius College, Buffalo, in 1960. She continued her education at the University of North Florida, Jacksonville, receiving a Masters of Science in Health in 1980. Mary spent most of her career as a high school educator at Bishop Neumann High School (1966-1977), teaching business and commerce where she was a Chairperson for the Business Department. She was also a moderator and President for the National Honor Society for New York State District No. 14. Mary took special joy as the Coordinator of the Work Experience Program that helped students obtain training and work experience with local businesses. She retired from teaching in 1977 and moved from Buffalo to Jacksonville. Upon receiving her second Masters, Mary began her second career as a counselor and then as a supervisor for Gateway Community Services in Jacksonville, serving the needs of those with alcohol and drug addictions. As a proud recovering alcoholic, she recently celebrated 47 years of sobriety and used her sobriety over the years to always be available to help others in crisis. Her last several years were spent at Cypress Village Senior Community, where she was involved with many hobbies including quilting, the camera club and scrapbooking, as well as serving as the editor of the monthly magazine and on several resident committees. During this time, Mary also provided continuing care for her late husband of 29 years, Roger Arnold, as his health declined until his death in 2005. Her greatest joy was with her grandchildren, who loved her dearly. Mary's warmth and joy will be terribly missed by her family and friends who will be comforted knowing that her love and the lessons she bestowed on us will remain forever. Arrangements are under the care of Hardage-Giddens Beaches Chapel, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 3, 2015 at 11 AM at the funeral home with inurnment to follow immediately after at H. Warren Smith Cemetery.
