Buffalo man, 23, leads police on high-speed chase

A 23-year-old Buffalo man allegedly drove over sidewalks and struck a Town of Tonawanda police patrol car during a pursuit Saturday night that involved officers from two other jurisdictions, authorities said.

Village of Kenmore police have charged William Apfel with speeding, unlawfully fleeing a police officer, reckless driving, reckless endangerment and three other vehicle and traffic violations.

The incident began about 8:50 p.m. when Kenmore police tried to pull over a silver-colored vehicle traveling 71 mph northbound on Delaware Avenue, which has a posted speed limit of 30 mph, police said.

The driver fled and was pursued into the Town and City of Tonawanda until the chase was abandoned because of safety concerns, according to police. The vehicle continued south on Niagara Falls Boulevard where it was stopped and the driver was taken into custody. Police did not disclose a reason why they believe the driver fled.

Apfel is due in Village of Kenmore Court on Jan. 27.
