WILSON – Investigators are looking into the shooting of a pet dog earlier this week behind a Youngstown-Lockport Road home.
A 16-year-old girl was walking the German shepherd-Labrador retriever mix in a field north of her home about 4 p.m. Tuesday when the dog ran off. Niagara County sheriff’s deputies said the girl was unable to get the dog to return to her, and a short time later she heard possible gunshots. The dog returned home, bleeding from a suspected gunshot wound to the stomach area. deputies said.
A veterinarian treated the pet for a small-caliber gunshot wound – entry and exit – and the dog was declared to be in good condition, deputies said.
Investigators, who said a .22-caliber weapon may have been used, suggested that the dog may have been mistaken for a coyote. Small-game season is currently underway in New York State.
