Volunteers from the American Red Cross, Western New York chapter, responded to three emergency situations on Christmas Day, providing emergency assistance to 25 people that included vouchers for temporary housing, food and clothing.
The incidents happened in homes on Broadway in Buffalo, where three people received assistance as a result of a neighboring building collapse; Willard Street in Jamestown, where five people were helped after a fire; and Main Street in Arcade, where five people also received assistance after a fire.
The volunteers were Fred Pask, Nicole Roma, Pete Swales, Phil Baker, Jeanie Shiffer, Brian Brown, and Julie Rapp.
This year, the Red Cross helped more people affected by home fires than all other disasters combined, the organization reported. Volunteers from the Western and Central New York Region helped more than 3,380 people with nowhere else to turn after home fires from Jan. 1 to Dec. 1.
