Walter A. Olson, retired founder of lawn care supply company

Walter A. Olson, the retired founder of Gro Green Products on Elk Street, died last Friday in his home at Canterbury Woods retirement community, East Amherst. He was 89.

Born in Flint, Mich., Mr. Olson moved to Buffalo with his family as a youngster and was a graduate of East Aurora High School.

During World War II, Mr. Olson served in the Navy Submarine Corps.

He also attended the University of Buffalo, where he was captain of the football team.

He founded Gro Green Products, a fertilizer and ice-melting crystals supply company in 1950 and sold the company in 2000. He was a member of the Buffalo Rotary Club, director of the Buffalo Athletic Club and was co-vice president of the Amherst Dance Club.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, the former Jessie Mae Traguair; a daughter, Lisa Marie Dent; and two sons, John R. and Kim C.

A memorial service is planned for the spring.
