Essie L. Savage, an active member of Calvary Baptist Church for more than 35 years, died Wednesday in Mercy Hospital. She was 86.
Born in Arcola, Miss., she was a graduate of Simmons High School in Hollandale, Miss., and worked as a staff member for Head Start.
In 1972, the former Essie Perry relocated to Buffalo with her husband, the late Rev. Arthur Savage, who served as pastor of Unity Baptist Church, where Mrs. Savage was a member of the adult choir and taught Sunday school.
In 1979, she became a member of Calvary Baptist Church, the Missionary Society, Mothers Board, Adult Choir, the Sunday school and Seniors Ministry.
Mrs. Savage also served as the shepherd mother of the Junior Laymen’s Department to the Laymen’s Auxiliary of the Great Lakes Baptist Association. She also was a member of the of the Great Lakes Ministers Wives and Widows Auxiliary and the Women’s Department of the Great Lakes Baptist Association. Mrs. Savage regularly attended the Empire Baptist Missionary Convention of New York, and was a recipient of the “No Cross, No Crown Award” given by the Great Lakes Women’s Auxiliary for her many years of civic and religious service.
Her husband died in 1977.
She is survived by three daughters, Deloris Lucas, Sheron Hall and Burnie Dean Royster; five sons, Stanfort J. Perry, Leslie Perry, Anthony Perry, Stephen Perry and Kennon Savage; and 10 grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at noon Tuesday in Calvary Baptist Church, 1184 Genesee St.
