Canisius High School kicking specialist Michael Tarbutt has been named to the second team of the American Family Insurance All-USA Football Team, chosen by USA Today.
The team began publishing the team in 1982, when the paper began.
Tarbutt played a big part in the success of the Crusaders during their undefeated 12-0 season. He made a school-record 49 extra points and also broke the school and league record for longest field goal twice. He hit a 52-yarder early in the season against Aquinas and topped that off with a 60-yard effort that bounced off the crossbar in the first-ever New York State Catholic High School Athletic Association championship game on Long Island Dec. 7. Canisius beat Archbishop Stepinac, 23-10, for the state title. The 60-yarder is the second-longest field goal in Western New York history behind Todd Sauerbrun’s 62-yard kick in 1990.
Tarbutt has signed with the University of Connecticut of the American Athletic Conference next season. He will study sports management.
