Gypsy jazz by the fire in the Roycroft Inn

Play your cards right, and “Yuletide carols being sung by the fire” could become more than just a line in “The Christmas Song.” On Friday, the Roycroft Inn, home to many a fireplace, will host the Hot Club of Buffalo. Featuring Josh Assad, Kevin O’Brien, E.J. Koepell, Dean Gionis and the garrulous Dr. Jazz, the Hot Club of Buffalo follows in the footsteps of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelly, who performed in the Hot Club of France. They play gypsy jazz in the spirit of the Hot Club of France and, more recently, of the Buffalo band Babik. “The style blends American big band swing with exotic European Gypsy sounds,” is how the band explains it. “The Hot Club approaches this vintage music with a modern sensibility, adding elements of rock and world music.”

Bask in the firelight and the swingy Hot Club sounds starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the lounge of the Roycroft Inn (40 S. Grove St., East Aurora). It’s part of the inn’s Friday Night Jazz series. Wine by the glass is available, as well as desserts, specialty cocktails and a light menu. For information, call 652-5552.
