Silent night! The words inspired Stillenacht Musik, a free hourlong Christmas Eve concert at Williamsville United Methodist Church (5681 Main St., Williamsville) that is turning into an annual event. At 8 p.m. Wednesday, Paul Ferington, who frequently conducts the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, is conducting a 26-piece chamber orchestra including some of the best musicians our town has to offer. The orchestra is teaming up with the 30-voice Chancel Choir for two Carol Cantatas of Robert Russell Bennett. Included in the cantatas are such carols as “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen,” the French classic “Now Is Born the Divine Christ Child,” “O Holy Night,” “We Three Kings,” “How Far Is It To Bethlehem?” and, of course, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”
The church emphasizes that this is a concert, not a service. However, the orchestra and choir also will participate in the church’s Candlelight Service of Lessons and Carols at 10 p.m.
This year’s concert is sponsored by the Two Sisters Foundation, a new group created to honor two longtime leaders of music at the church, Wendy Amuso and Judy Stafford. The foundation’s purpose will be to promote music in Williamsville.
