Letter: Quitting smoking is a wonderful gift

Quitting smoking is a wonderful gift

Still need an idea for the best holiday gift for your family? Ask your doctor to help you quit smoking. Your family will be overjoyed, and your doctor will be eager to help.

Your doctor is the best person to help you quit smoking. Getting advice and care from your doctor more than doubles your chances of successfully quitting. He will help you make a plan and may be able to provide medications to help support your quit goals.

Most importantly, consider the gift you’ll be giving yourself. Shortly after quitting tobacco, your blood pressure and pulse rate return to normal, your risk of a heart attack drops, your senses of taste and smell improve, breathing is easier and your lung capacity increases. And you will have more money in your pocket.

You can also contact the New York State Smokers’ Quitline, which is based at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, at 1-866-NY-QUITS (1-866-697-8487) for support and a free personalized quit plan. In addition, Roswell Park offers free cessation classes and drop-in booster sessions. Call 845-8667 for details.

Talk to your doctor and give yourself and your family the best gift this year – make a plan to quit for good and enjoy the gift of better health.
