Fund set up to pay funeral costs for 16-year-old shooting victim

A fund has been set up to help pay funeral expenses for Jamilah Furquan, the 16-year-old girl shot and killed Friday night on the city’s West Side.

Friends and classmates of Jamilah’s mother, Brandi Avent, said they are trying to raise $8,500 at to assist Avent with funeral costs.

“Brandi is such a caring person,” said Samantha Kelleher, Avent’s classmate in a licensed practical nurse program through Erie 1 BOCES. “She’s supported us throughout this whole program and she lives for her kids. And now one of them got taken away so we’re just trying to help her out the best that we can.”

The shooting occurred about 11:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Grant Street, police said. Detectives said gunfire at the vehicle Jamilah was in also struck a 20-year-old man, according to police. His condition was not known Sunday.
