The School Board is weighing whether to allow veteran’s tax exemptions on school taxes, and decided to hold a public referendum during its upcoming May budget vote to glean public input on the issue.
The board discussed the issue last week after a presentation by Erie County officials.
“The board is struggling with a decision and wants public input,” Superintendent Jeff Rabey said. “It’s a decision the Board of Education takes very seriously.”
School districts do not have to seek a referendum, although some have. Boards of education could unilaterally make their own decision, but Depew has decided to glean public input - as the Eden Central School District recently did with a referendum.
If veteran’s exemptions are ultimately offered on school taxes in the Depew district, it would mean that a non-veteran property owner would face an additional 51 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation - or an extra $51 per year on a home assessed at $100,000.
The School Board next meets Jan. 20 at the high school, 5201 S. Transit Road.
