Time to remind ourselves that morality comes first
The release of the report on the questionable practices of the CIA has, not surprisingly, generated passionate responses covering a wide spectrum of opinions. One of the main arguments revolves around the legality of certain enhanced interrogation practices versus the morality of such conduct.
History is replete with examples of those who abandoned morality and hid behind someone else’s prognostications that such practices were legal or, that they were just following orders or, the end justified the means.
Surely it is timely to remind ourselves that morality comes first. Laws are subsequently created in support of our moral principles, but never relieve us of the need to maintain our personal moral compass.
