Telephone scammer expands to other towns in Erie County

A telephone scammer posing as an official of the Erie County Sheriff’s Office and threatening Clarence residents has expanded his domain to other sections of the county, Sheriff Timothy B. Howard said Friday.

The caller, who demands payments to spare residents possible arrest for avoiding grand jury duty they knew nothing about, is now targeting residents in the towns of Cheektowaga, Elma, Lancaster and Tonawanda, Howard said.

The Sheriff’s Office does not use the telephone to settle legal warrants and summonses or solicit and process payments of fines and penalties, Howard added.

Those receiving the calls are urged to record the phone number if possible and call Erie County Sheriff’s Office at (716) 858-2903.
