Record Store Day launches first post-Thanksgiving event

Record Store Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of April, as a means of furthering the existence of long-embattled independent music retailers across the world. That will be the case once again in April of 2015, but this year, the folks behind RSD are trying something new: Black Friday record Store Day.

Seeking to capitalize on the fact that American consumers lose their minds and spend untold amounts of money on the day following Thanksgiving, RSD organizers have assembled a killer list of exclusive RSDBF releases, many of them limited edition vinyl-only collector’s items. Local retailers including the two Record Theatre locations and Spiral Scratch Records will participate in the event’s maiden voyage.

The list of artists releasing exclusive products on this day is an impressive one, and includes the likes of St. Vincent, Afghan Whigs, Afrika Bambaataa David Bowie, First Aid Lit, Miles Davis, the Flaming Lips, the Grateful Dead, Hozier, Conor Oberst, Billie Holiday, Metallica, the Kinks and Mastodon.

Perhaps the biggest new for serious vinyl junkies is the release of Neil Young’s “The Official release Series Vol. 5-8.” This is an extremely limited all-vinyl box set featuring newly remastered editions of the seminal Young albums “Time Fades Away,” “On the Beach,” “Tonight’s the Night, and “Zuma.”

As is always the case with RSD events, there are no guarantees concerning which stores get which products, and of course, all of the goods are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Based on past experiences, I strongly suggest you get there early if you’ve got a particular release on your wish list.
