LEWISTON – Eugene J. Dimet, of Lewiston, retired president of Simon Oil Co., died Sunday in Roswell Park Cancer Institute after a short illness. He was 82.
Born in Niagara Falls, he was a graduate of Niagara Falls High School and Miami University in Ohio. He earned a master’s degree in business from Columbia University and served in the Army Quartermaster Corps.
Mr. Dimet joined Simon Oil, founded by his father in 1921, and served as secretary and vice president before becoming president in 1986 upon the death of his brother, Ted.
He retired in 1995 when the company, a wholesale gasoline distributor which operated numerous gas stations in the area, was sold to Reid Petroleum Corp. of Lockport. He was a former member of the executive committee of the Empire State Petroleum Association.
Mr. Dimet was the youngest person to serve on the board of trustees of the former Temple Beth Israel in Niagara Falls and provided major support to rebuild the temple’s cemetery on Military Road. He also was a past president of the B’Nai B’rith.
He was a member of the board of directors of M&T Bank in Niagara Falls and a member of the board of directors and executive committee of the Buffalo Zoo, where he served as chairman of the Animal Operations and Horticultural Committee.
He also was a member of the board of directors of the Old Fort Niagara Association, a past president of the Mount St. Mary’s Hospital Board of Associates and served on the Town of Lewiston’s Modern Disposal Community Advisory Committee.
He was a recipient of the Niagara Falls Jaycees Man of the Year Distinguished Service Award.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, the former Janet Fleishmann; a daughter, Lauren Waters; a son, Jason; and two grandsons.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday in the Niagara Falls Country Club, 505 Mountain View Drive.
