Weather causes extension of CWM comment period

PORTER – The public comment period regarding the planned expansion of hazardous waste landfilling at CWM Chemical Services, which was to expire today, will be extended to Tuesday because of the snowstorm, the state Department of Environmental Conservation announced Thursday.

CWM is seeking state permission to dig a second landfill at its Balmer Road site, since its current landfill is running out of space. Local environmentalists are opposing the plan, hoping to prevent further waste disposal at the local site.

Comments that arrive by Tuesday will be considered, the DEC said, and the deadline to apply for party status in the upcoming siting board process also has been moved to 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Comments may be mailed to Chief Administrative Law Judge James T. McClymonds at the DEC, Office of Hearings and Mediation Services, 625 Broadway, 1st Floor, Albany, NY 12233-5500. They also may be emailed to CWM.RWMUNIT2@dec.ny,gov.
