Seaway strike deadline pushed back

Unionized workers threatening to strike along the St. Lawrence Seaway have pushed back their deadline to 5 p.m. Monday, as talks continue.

About 460 Unifor workers were poised to walk out Friday afternoon, which the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp. said would have caused traffic on the Seaway – including the Welland Canal – to halt. The SLSMC operates the Seaway.

Unifor said the two sides have been meeting “day and night” since Tuesday to try to reach a deal, and will continue talks this weekend under a “media blackout as long as the parties remain engaged in the process.”

The two sides are at odds over staffing, as the SLSMC implements hands-free mooring and remote lock operations as part of a modernization program.
