National opera group spotlights Buffalo event

One of Buffalo’s own Opera Week events has been singled out for special notice by the national group Opera America. Opera America’s list of a select 15 or so events that are especially noteworthy includes the lecture being given on Saturday by contralto Suzanne Fatta.

“Suzanne Fatta will take a look at portrayals of witchcraft, magic and folk religions in opera and music-drama throughout the Western canon — from Ulrica and Dido’s Sorceress to Carmen reading the tarot cards. Special attention will be played to the range/fach, character and musical themes attached to these female roles. During the lecture, attendees will enjoy live performances of opera arias,” is how the opera officials describe the event.

Other events on Opera America’s select list include the Minnesota Opera’s Social Media Preview Night and Wichita Opera’s “Fright Night,” held in a haunted air terminal.

Fatta recently made a cameo appearance in the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra’s production of “Bluebeard’s Castle.” Her lecture, titled “Wayward Sisters,” takes place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Rockwell Hall Room 124, SUNY Buffalo State (1300 Elmwood Ave.). The lecture is free and so is the parking.

Opera Week continues through the weekend.
