When is dance more than dance?
When it is Shaping Sound. That’s the name of a group of dancers who are going beyond the basics to give shape and sound to the form as “visual musicians.”
Emmy-nominated choreographers Travis Wall, Nick Lazzarini, Teddy Forance and Kyle Robinson – all seen on such shows as “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Dancing With the Stars” – have created an energetic mash-up of jazz, hip-hop and modern that they mix with athleticism. The show has been lauded by audiences and critics. “Once in a generation there is a group of artists who changes the trajectory of a genre,” wrote The Advocate.
The four, who were first seen on the reality series “All the Right Moves,” have since worked on such prestigious telecasts as the Oscars, Grammys and MTV Video Music Awards; and performed and choreographed for stars including Lady Gaga, Adele, Rihanna and Kelly Clarkson and for films like “Step Up Revolution.”
Shaping Sound performs at 8 p.m. Saturday in Shea’s Performing Arts Center (646 Main St.). Tickets are $28-$63 (box office, Ticketmaster). Call (800) 745-7000.
