Roswell Park to be part of study of breast cancer in African-American women

A joint study by Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Rutgers School of Public Health that is looking into breast cancer in African-American women has received a $5.7 million grant for the next five years.

Compared to Caucasians, African-American women are more likely to develop breast cancer at a younger age and at a later disease stage. The grant will support research by Roswell Park’s Dr. Chi-Chen Hong and others into the impact of obesity and other health factors on survival and quality of life. The study builds on another – the Women’s Circle of Health Study, co-led by Dr. Christine Ambrosone of Roswell Park – that looked into risk factors for aggressive breast cancer in both Caucasian and African-American women.
