Wier earns golf victory on Carolina Winter Tour

Playing in only his third professional tournament, Thaddeus Wier III of East Aurora won the Black Bear Golf Club stop on the National Golf Association SwingThought.com Carolina Winter Tour in Longs, S.C.

The former East Aurora, St. John Fisher College and Springville CC golfer shot an 11-under-par 66-67-133 to top a field of 13 in the two-day, 36-hole event and collect around $1,800. After forcing a playoff with a birdie on the final hole, Wier defeated Casey Johnson of Martinez, Ga., with a birdie on the first playoff hole.

In two previous events on what was formerly the Hooters Tour, Wier finished sixth and fourth. Sixteen events make up the Carolina Winter Tour.

Wier, 24, who plays now out of Myrtle Beach, S.C., birdied four of the par-4 holes in his Monday round and had birdied three of the par-5s on the course on Tuesday.
