Szczerbinski surges in Scorpion qualifying

John Szczerbinski of North Tonawanda shot the third-best score, 1,671 in the first seven-game qualifying block Tuesday in the PBA Scorpion Championship, an event in the PBA World Series of Bowling at Sunset Station Lanes in Las Vegas, Nev.

His total assured him of a spot in the 24-bowler field for the second round of qualifying late on Tuesday. More important, it gave the former Wichita State University standout an overall total of 6,333 for 28 games on the four animal patterns and assured him one of the 24 slots in the PBA World Championship tournament which begins today. Szczerbinski posted the ninth-best total.
