Rosemary M. Pitre Shaffer, Catholic educator, dies at 78

Rosemary M. Pitre Shaffer, of Amherst, a Catholic school teacher and principal, died Monday in Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, after a year’s illness. She was 78.

Born in Buffalo, the former Rosemary Hutton was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy and earned her master’s degree from the University at Buffalo.

She was a teacher at Good Shepherd School in Pendleton and served three years as principal of Northern Chautauqua Catholic School in Dunkirk, then became assistant principal at St. John the Baptist School in the Town of Tonawanda. She retired in 1998.

She was a hospice volunteer.

Her first husband, Bert Pitre, died in 1986. She was remarried to Jerry Shaffer, who died in 2005.

Survivors include a daughter, Beth Badour; a sister, Kathi Hutton; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church, 65 Main St., North Tonawanda.
