Local band spotlight: Bryan Johnson & Family

Local lake-pop foursome, Bryan Johnson & Family, recently premiered the first single from its forthcoming EP, “Cool Your Jets,” set to be released in November on Buffalo rooted label, Admirable Traits. Titled, “Dead Fox,” the crisp guitars and vocals, toe-tapping beat and care-free melody would be best enjoyed by fans of Vampire Weekend, Beach Boys and Weezer had front-man Rivers Como spent more time at the beach.

The five-track “Cool Your Jets,” which also features live staples “Cerulean Eyes” and the bursting title track, marks the first proper album from the peppy quartet, which previously released an early demo and some fantastic stand-alone singles over the last couple of years while honing its live sound and settling in on a steady lineup. Various formations of the band have been floating around since 2010, but the group’s current make up – Johnson (guitar), Philip Penepent (bass), David Hamilton (guitar) and Roy Draves (drums) – may be its best, and certainly loudest, yet. Johnson, along with Draves, can also be found in emo-punk outfit Real People.

Bryan Johnson & Family is set to celebrate the release of “Cool Your Jets” on Nov. 6 in the newly opened Studio @ the Waiting Room, a more intimate space than the at-times cavernous downstairs venue on Delaware Avenue. Providing support for the evening will be emo trio, Del Paxton, and the punk-funk collective, Mallwalkers. The $10 entry includes a physical copy of ‘Cool Your Jets.’
