What’s a mall without a food court?
You may find out soon at the Boulevard Mall.
The food court in the popular Amherst shopping mall at 1265 Niagara Falls Blvd., is slated to be demolished to make way for a new Dick’s Sporting Goods store, according to plans filed with the Town of Amherst Planning Department.
When reached Monday, Boulevard Mall General Manager Brian Calvert said he could not elaborate on the project at this time.
But plans filed by the mall’s owner, Cleveland-based Forest City Commercial Development, show demolition of the food court, which occupies 29,600 square feet in the southeast corner of the mall at Alberta Drive.
Knocking down the food court would then pave the way for construction of a 55,000-square-foot Dick’s store. Plans also show the reconfiguration of the surrounding parking lot, which would reduce the number of spaces by 79 to 348.
The project is scheduled to go before the Amherst Planning Board next month for site plan approval.
There’s speculation that the new Dick’s location at the Boulevard Mall would replace the nearby Dick’s store at 281 Meyer Road.
Meanwhile, the Boulevard Mall’s food court – which includes a children’s play area and a full-sized American Carousel – long has been a huge draw for families, especially during the winter months.
But the redevelopment includes no plans to rebuild the food court elsewhere on mall property. Developers did indicate to the town that a few of the food court tenants would be dispersed in spaces throughout the mall.
