NIAGARA FALLS – Grab a shopping cart, fill it with as much expensive merchandise as possible and leave the store – hopefully unnoticed.
Niagara Falls police say this recipe for a shoplifting haul has been happening with increased regularity in the Military Road shopping district – and, most recently, on Saturday night.
That’s when Lincoln Smith Jr., 36, of University Court walked into the Super Walmart, grabbed a cart and began filling it, police said. Within minutes of his 8:15 p.m. arrival, Smith had gathered 115 items worth $1,765.04 and was on his way out the door when confronted by a store security officer, said police, who charged him with fourth-degree grand larceny. The suspect faces an appearance in Niagara Falls City Court on Monday.
Other local shopping centers, including the South Transit Road strip in the Town of Lockport, have seen a rise in similar incidents, police agencies note.
