JOYCE, Ruth M. (Adams)

JOYCE JOYCE - Ruth M. (nee Adams)
October 19, 2014, beloved wife and companion for 71 years of Herbert E. Joyce, MD. She passed peacefully in her home at Canterbury Woods, Williamsville, surrounded by her loving family. Cherished mother of Christine Joyce Miller (Ray), James E. (MaryAnn Even) Joyce and William L. (Anne Harding) Joyce; adored grandmother of Stacey Miller McDermott, Brian Miller, Margaret Joyce, Molly Joyce and Sarah Genau; dearest great-grandmother of Tiernan and Lorcan McDermott, William and Alexandra Genau; also survived by many nieces and nephews. Ruth attended Kensington High School and Buffalo State Teachers College. The love story with her husband Herb began 71 years ago in October, 1943. She was in charge of the frosh hop at Buff State with her lifelong friend, Jane (Grimes) MacLennan. Due to a shortage of men on campus because of WW II, they invited the medical and dental students from UB. One of those med students was Herb Joyce. They later wed in June 1945, the same day he graduated from the University of Buffalo Medical School. It was a love story that only grew more beautiful as she devoted herself to her family and taking on the challenge of being the wife of a busy and committed family physician. Ruth was involved with the Women's Board of Deaconess Hospital for over three decades, chairing various committees and serving a term as president of the board. She also coordinated the volunteers for the Deaconess gift shop and snack bar, and helped with fund-raisers for the hospital. She also volunteered for the Protestant Home for Children and St. Rita's Home for Children with Disabilities. Ruth took up oil painting in her 60's with her specialty being birds. The family has many priceless "Ruthies" to enjoy. Ruth was the consummate daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. A Celebration of Love and Life will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2014, at 11 AM at Amherst Community Church, 77 Washington Hwy., Amherst. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations will be gratefully accepted by the Benevolence Fund of Canterbury Woods, 705 Renaissance Dr., Williamsville, 14221, or the Dept. of Family Medicine Endowment Fund, C/O University at Buffalo Foundation, Inc. "in memory of Ruth Joyce," PO Box 730, Buffalo, NY, 14226-0730. "There is no death for a lovely lady who leaves forever ripples of wondrous memories in our hearts." H.E. Joyce
