Elizabeth, the royal tweeter

Twitter reigns.

At least it does now that Britain’s Queen Elizabeth has tapped out her first tweet, from Friday’s opening of an exhibition at the Science Museum in Central London.

“It is a pleasure to open the Information Age exhibition today at the @ScienceMuseum and I hope people will enjoy visiting. Elizabeth R.” she broadcast in 135 characters using the Twitter handle @BritishMonarchy.

Jumping ship at Channel 4

Channel 7’s raid of the news staff of its competition continued Friday with the news that it has hired the executive producer at Channel 4.

Aaron Mason, who is in charge of all the producers at the CBS affiliate, is moving over to Channel 7 in late November as the station’s assistant news director.

Peter Jacobus, the interim news director at Channel 4 since the ouster of Joe Schlaerth, announced Friday afternoon to the station’s staff that Mason has resigned, effective Nov. 21.

Channel 7 General Manager Mike Nurse confirmed that Mason will be the station’s assistant news director once he is free of his Channel 4 obligations.

Mason, who is highly thought of inside Channel 4’s news department, has been with that station for more than a decade and was the producer of the 11 p.m. newscast before he was named executive producer earlier this year.

The news comes as Channel 4 continues to look for Schlaerth’s permanent replacement amid speculation that Jacobus is eager to leave as soon as possible.

Shakira is partnering with Fisher-Price to launch a line of baby toys as well as a Web series for moms.

The Mattel, Inc.-owned company based in East Aurora announced Friday that the First Steps collection of toys and baby gear would be available in November. Shakira co-developed six products, including a bouncer that plays music, alphabet blocks and a musical soccer ball, an ode to her soccer-playing boyfriend Gerard Pique.

All of the proceeds will benefit her Barefoot Foundation, which provides education and nutrition to children in impoverished areas of her native Colombia. Pre-order on Amazon for the products begins Monday.

The Grammy-winning singer is pregnant and is the mother of 21-month-old Milan. The Web series debuts Monday.
