Kenya native spared jail but may be deported

A Buffalo woman who is a citizen of Kenya was spared prison Thursday for conspiring to commit marriage fraud but may face deportation.

Pauline Gichuri, 40, received one year of probation when sentenced by U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara. Gichuri paid a U.S. citizen $5,000 to enter into a sham marriage in 2004 so she could remain in the country, said U.S. Attorney John E. Rogowski, who added that she obtained her citizenship fraudulently, and is now subject to denaturalization proceedings and possible depoirtation.
