A woman died Wednesday morning shortly after being rescued from her burning Cheektowaga home, police said.
Lorraine Jaskowiak, 87, had a heart attack. She died shortly after being rescued, said police, who got the report of the fire at about 8 a.m.
She was unconscious when a neighbor, Anthony Shearer, pulled her from her home at 145 Rossler Ave., police said.
Shearer responded when he heard the smoke alarm and saw flames. “To risk his own life to try to save a neighbor certainly epitomizes a neighbor looking out for a neighbor,” said Jim Speyer, assistant Cheektowaga police chief.
“He’s one of those neighbors everyone would love to have.”
The cause of the fire, which was located in the front hall, is still under investigation, Speyer said.
Jaskowiak smoked and had oxygen in the house, he said.
“That might have been a factor,” he said.
