Wegmans accepting Apple Pay

Cash, credit card or iPhone?

Wegmans will accept Apple Pay, a form of digital payment, at its stores.

“It requires installation of new payment terminals at all of the registers,” Michele S. Mehaffy, a Wegmans spokeswoman, said Tuesday. “The rollout went smoothly yesterday. By Thursday, all of our Buffalo stores will have the terminals to allow for customers to use Apple Pay.”

The system is up and running at stores on McKinley Parkway in Hamburg, Losson Road store in Depew and on Orchard Park Road in West Seneca. It will be online today at stores on Amherst Street in Buffalo, Military Road in Niagara Falls and Niagara Falls Boulevard in Amherst. The Alberta Drive and Sheridan Drive stores in Amherst also will be ready today, followed Thursday by stores on Dick Road in Depew and Transit Road in Amherst.

Apple Pay is a “mobile wallet” that allows customers to pay for purchases without using cash or a credit card. After credit or debit card information is linked to a user’s account, they can tap their phone against an Apple Pay terminal at the checkout and have the purchase deducted. Customers will still be required to sign a receipt for the purchase.

Account numbers are not stored on the phone or on Apple’s servers, but in a near-field communication, or NFC, chip.

Apple Pay is available to customers using iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and the Apple Watch.
