Sleep-out to raise awareness of plight of the homeless

Members of youth groups, business clubs and community organizations are invited to spend the night in a cardbord box on Nov. 14 to raise money to help the homeless.

Family Promise of Western New York is hosting a Cardboard Box City and Open House to support its services, which include providing a safe environment for the homeless, complete with showers, laundry and kitchen facilities, case management, computers and job search help, and transportation to school, training and other appointments

The “residents” of Cardboard Box City spend a night in a box, tent or car to get a sense of how homeless people have to live when they have nowhere else to stay. The sleep-out is being held in conjunction with an open house at the Family Promise headquarters to showcase its new Family Resource Center. The center provides case management and counseling services to help families gain employment and find permanent housing.

The sleep-out and open house begin at 5 p.m. Nov. 14 at 149 French Road, Cheektowaga. For more information, to register for Cardboard Box City, or to sponsor those in the sleep-out, visit or call 771-3007.
