Ceremony marks centennial of Lockport’s Big Bridge

LOCKPORT – A short ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday will mark the 100th anniversary of the construction of the Big Bridge, which carries Main Street over the Erie Canal.

The bridge, billed as one of the widest in the world according to a historical marker, was erected at the same time as the current steel locks on the canal.

Brian S. Smith, vice president of the city’s Greater Lockport Development Corp. said a proclamation will be read by an alderman at Canal and Church streets, after which cupcakes will be served inside the Erie Canal Discovery Center at Church and Ontario streets.

Demonstration of the restored lock gates on the Flight of Five, the 19th-century canal locks, will be offered until 2 p.m.
