Bennington town clerk arrested for thefts of funds

BENNINGTON – Bennington Town Clerk Tina Metz was arrested Tuesday on felony and misdemeanor charges for stealing more than $14,000 in town receipts last year, according to New York State Comptroller P. DiNapoli and Wyoming County District Attorney Donald O’Geen.

Taken into custody at Town Hall by Wyoming County sheriff’s deputies, Metz, 54, was arraigned in Warsaw Village Court and ordered to return to court for further proceedings Nov. 17.

A state audit of town funds revealed the shortfall in town funds collected for permits, fees and taxes. Metz is accused of trying to cover up the thefts by quickly depositing some of the missing funds in town bank accounts. Authorities said she claimed she had been storing some receipts in her home and found more than $6,000 in the bottom of a filing cabinet in her Town Hall office.

DiNapoli said the recent hasty deposits raised a “red flag.”
