Points after: Texans 23, Bills 17

HOUSTON -- Quick highlights from the Buffalo Bills' loss to the Houston Texans in NRG Stadium ...

What it means: The Bills fell to 2-2 and lost a pair of important defenders. The Bills were the better team for much of the game, but the Texans featured the most phenomenal player, who made all the difference.

Past beats the present: Bills quarterback EJ Manuel was outperformed by his predecessor. Ryan Fitzpatrick was far from sensational. Fitzpatrick went 25 of 37 for 268 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions. But Manuel was 21 of 44 for 225 yards and two TDs with a heinous pick-six that swung the outcome and another interception that sealed the game.

Turning point: Less than 90 seconds into the third quarter, with the Bills on the verge of increasing their lead on third-and-3 from the Texans' 12-yard line, Manuel threw directly to Texans manimal J.J. Watt in the right flat. Watt ran 80 yards untouched to give the Texans their first lead.

Player of the game: Watt was in the backfield all afternoon. Watt committed a pair of roughing-the-passer penalties for hitting Manuel low, but he had nine QB hits. The six QB hits he recorded in the first half already were a career high. He nearly tackled Manuel for a safety in the fourth quarter.

Bills player of the game: Mike Williams provided his team's top highlight with a career-best 80-yard touchdown play to keep Buffalo's hopes alive in the fourth quarter.

Stat of the game: With 3:27 left in the first half, the Texans had five rushing attempts for minus-7 yards.

Preliminary injury report: Bills linebacker Nigel Bradham hurt his knee while making an interception on the first play of the second half. He did not return. ... Also in the third quarter, defensive tackle Kyle Williams injured a knee while sacking Fitzpatrick and did not return. ... Bills cornerback Ron Brooks was sidelined in the fourth quarter with a shoulder injury.

Bills inactives (healthy unless noted): Running back Bryce Brown, receiver Marquise Goodwin (head), receiver Marcus Easley (knee), guard Chris Williams (back), tackle Cyrus Kouandjio, linebacker Randell Johnson (knee), cornerback Ross Cockrell.

Texans inactives (healthy unless noted): Quarterback Tom Savage, receiver Devier Posey, tackle Jeff Adams, outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney (knee), cornerback A.J. Bouye (groin), safety Eddie Pleasant (ankle), safety Shiloh Keo (calf).

Coming up: The Bills will play the Detroit Lions at Ford Field next Sunday.
