Friends of Night People raising awareness about hunger

Friends of Night People is participating in Hunger Action Month, a nationwide campaign in September to raise awareness of hunger and provide food for people in need. The group is asking supporters to share the news with friends, coworkers and other groups to make the drive a community event.

For Hunger Action Month, donors are asked for specific food donations each day. For instance, the first week’s food requests are, in order, tea bags, Cheerios or oat cereal, pasta, pasta sauce, fruit cocktail, cranberry sauce and canned carrots. The full calendar can be found online at

Friends of Night People has seen a 17 percent increase in the number of hungry people it is feeding this year. It served more than 90,000 meals in 2013.

Food items can be dropped off any day of the week between 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Labor Day) at the Night People kitchen, 394 Hudson St. The delivery door is on Wadsworth; just ring the bell.
