Violinist murder suspect charged with theft from restaurant

Jonathan Conklin, one of two men arrested Friday in the slaying of Mary Whitaker in Chautauqua County, was also arrested for grand larceny from an unrelated incident earlier this month.

On Aug. 3, during normal business hours, Conklin, 43, of Erie, Pa., entered Murdock’s Family Restaurant in Sherman and stole $1,150, according to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office.

He then traveled to Erie to avoid police, the Sheriff’s Office said.

On Friday, while Conklin was wanted on warrants for grand larceny, he and Charles Sanford, 30, of Erie, were arrested separately in Erie as suspects for the slaying of Whitaker, 61, which took place early that morning at her summer home in the Town of Westfield.
